Chandra Bhedan — from chandra (moon) and bhedan (piercing, penetrating) — is the Left Nostril Breathing pranayama, the direct counterpart to Surya Bhedan. Where Surya Bhedan activates the solar Pingala channel through the right nostril, Chandra Bhedan activates the lunar Ida channel through the left nostril, producing cooling, calming, and inward-drawing effects. It is one of the most therapeutically specific pranayamas in the classical system: when the body or mind is overheated, overstimulated, or inflamed, Chandra Bhedan directly addresses the root cause.
The Ida Nadi and Lunar Energy
The Ida nadi is the left pranic channel, associated with the left nostril, the moon, cooling energy, the parasympathetic nervous system, introversion, and the feminine or receptive quality of consciousness. When the left nostril is dominant, the parasympathetic nervous system is more active, body temperature is slightly lower, and the mind is more inward, creative, and receptive. Chandra Bhedan deliberately sustains this Ida-dominant state: all inhalations enter through the left nostril and all exhalations exit through the right.
How to Practise
Steps
- Sit comfortably upright. Apply Nasagra Mudra with the right hand.
- Close the right nostril with the thumb. Inhale slowly and fully through the left nostril — 4 counts.
- Close the left nostril with the ring finger. Release the right nostril. Exhale slowly and completely through the right nostril — 8 counts.
- This is one round. The pattern repeats: always inhale left, always exhale right.
- Practise 10–15 rounds. For advanced practice, add internal retention (Antara Kumbhaka) after inhalation.
Benefits and Therapeutic Applications
- Cools the body: Chandra Bhedan directly reduces internal body heat — it is the cooling pranayama of choice for Pitta conditions (inflammation, fever, acidity, anger) and hot weather practice.
- Calms the mind: The activation of the Ida nadi produces a quiet, inward, receptive mental state — particularly useful for those who are mentally overactive, anxious, or unable to slow down.
- Supports sleep: Practised in the evening, Chandra Bhedan is one of the most reliable natural sleep aids available — it specifically counters the sympathetic overactivation that underlies insomnia.
- Reduces Pitta conditions: In Ayurveda, Chandra Bhedan is specifically prescribed for excess Pitta: acid reflux, skin inflammation, anger, and overheating.
- Supports creativity and intuition: The right hemisphere of the brain (associated with the left nostril, per yogic and neuroscientific models) is associated with spatial awareness, artistic thinking, and intuitive problem-solving.
Contraindications
- Kapha constitutions or conditions (heaviness, sluggishness, depression) — cooling practices will increase Kapha. Use Surya Bhedan instead.
- Cold, damp weather conditions — avoid further cooling the system.
- Low blood pressure — cooling and calming practices can lower blood pressure further.
Common Mistakes
A common error is practising Chandra Bhedan in the morning as a substitute for Nadi Shodhana — the cooling, inward effects of Chandra Bhedan are appropriate for evenings and for specific Pitta conditions, but practising it first thing in the morning can produce excessive sluggishness, particularly in Kapha types. The therapeutic specificity of this pranayama is its value — it should be applied when cooling is genuinely needed, not as a general practice.
